The iPhone 12 has dominated the best-sellers list for the first quarter of 2021, both in terms of volume and revenue, the technology analyst firm Counterpoint Research says.

The cost of the blended materials for the iPhone 12 with 128GB of NAND flash comes to about US$415 (A$537), an increase of 21% over the iPhone 11, the technology research firm Counterpoint Research says after the latest bill of materials analysis by its own component research practice.

Samsung, Apple and Xiaomi fared much better than other smartphone brands in the Western European market during the third quarter, the technology analyst firm IDC says, adding that total shipments decline 6.5% year-on-year to 28.8 million units.

Despite having to delay the launch of its iPhone 12, Apple has continued to be the top OEM in the US in 3Q 2020, with strong sales, the technology analyst firm Counterpoint Research reports.

Demand for smartphones in Australia has declined marginally due to the economic toll of the COVID-19 pandemic and handset supply delays, with a 5% drop in sales of the phones in the first half of this year.

Apple's iPhone 11 was the second best-selling smartphone globally in 2019, even though it was released in September of that year, meaning that four months were sufficient for it to gain that position. The top position was also taken by the same company, with the iPhone XR taking a 3% market share globally.

Refurbished products can be a brilliant way to save money on previous-gen devices, but when Apple launches powerful new products at various price points, sometimes buying refurbished is a terrible deal.

The first set of Apple's new products for late 2019 have arrived, with new iPhones, a new entry-level iPad and new Apple Watch with always-on display, alongside Apple Arcade and Apple's streaming TV service, with new iPad Pros and a new MacBook still to come, presumably in October.
